Baby Safety Products Guide

Beyond fixed babyproofing hardware like outlet covers, cabinet locks, and furniture anchors, many parents also consider a second category of safety products: monitors, thermometers, and basic home safety devices. No monitor, wearable device, or smart product replaces active supervision or safe sleep practices. The FDA has not authorized any consumer device — including wearable monitors — to prevent SIDS, and the AAP notes there’s no evidence that audio/video monitors reduce SIDS risk either. Choose a thermometer type based on your baby’s age, keep monitor cords at least three feet from the crib per CPSC guidance, and treat smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as a baseline safety layer, not an optional extra.

Audio and Video Baby Monitors

The American Academy of Pediatrics is clear that monitoring technology should never substitute for direct supervision, and that there’s no evidence a monitor decreases the chance of SIDS. A monitor can be a convenience for hearing or seeing your baby from another room, but it doesn’t replace checking on them in person or following safe sleep practices.

Monitors also have real limitations: range and clarity vary, other electronics can cause interference, and any wireless device needs a strong password and up-to-date software to reduce hacking risk. Constant audio monitoring can also disrupt a parent’s own sleep and lead to overreacting to normal newborn sounds like snoring or movement.

The CPSC recommends keeping baby monitors and their cords at least three feet away from the crib or anywhere your baby can reach, since cords are a strangulation hazard. Choose a battery-powered or wireless unit where possible, and never route a cord across or into the crib.

Wearable and Vital-Sign Monitors

Smart socks, clips, and other wearables that claim to track a baby’s heart rate, oxygen level, or breathing are a distinct category from standard audio/video monitors, and the FDA has specifically warned about them. According to the agency, “many infant monitors currently sold over-the-counter (OTC) for vital sign monitoring do not have FDA marketing authorization,” meaning their safety and effectiveness haven’t been independently reviewed.

Most importantly for safe sleep: the FDA states it “is not aware of any clinical or scientific evidence that shows that currently available baby products prevent or reduce the chance of SIDS,” and that “no devices, including infant monitors, have been authorized to prevent SIDS or SUID.” If you’re considering a wearable monitor, check the FDA’s device databases for authorization (product code QYU) and talk with your pediatrician about whether it’s appropriate for your baby — and never let one change how you follow safe sleep guidance.

Digital Thermometers

The AAP recommends digital thermometers over glass or mercury models, and matches thermometer type to age. A rectal reading is described as giving “the best reading, especially for infants under 3 months of age.” Forehead (temporal artery) thermometers can be used at any age, while ear (tympanic) thermometers aren’t recommended until 6 months, since younger babies have narrow ear canals that can throw off the reading.

Mercury thermometers should be removed from the home entirely — the AAP warns they can break and release toxic mercury vapor. Whatever type you choose, follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely, since technique affects accuracy as much as the device itself.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

These aren’t baby-specific products, but they’re part of a safe nursery. The AAP recommends smoke alarms on every level of the home, especially near sleeping areas, tested monthly; it’s best to use long-life-battery models, but otherwise change batteries at least once a year.

For carbon monoxide, the AAP recommends at least one CO detector on each floor of the home, with batteries changed every six months. Plug-in detectors can fail to alert during a power outage, so a battery-powered or battery-backup model provides more consistent protection. If any alarm sounds, leave the home and call 911 rather than trying to locate the source yourself.
